It's not your imagination - there is smoke in the area but no local fire. Marblehead Police confirmed this morning the thick haze and smell of smoke in town today is in fact from the serious wildfires burning in Quebec, Canada.
The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued an air quality alert for most of eastern Massachusetts today due to smoke caused by wildfires raging in Quebec.
The air quality alert, in effect until 8 p.m., means that "fine particulates concentrations within the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards," according to the DEP's alert.

By 5 p.m. this evening, most of the smoke which was heavy in Marblehead this morning, had moved away from the coast and to the West.
The National Weather Service has also confirmed smoke from the Quebecois forest fires was blowing into the North Shore this morning because of the wind direction.

Winds shifted to the West this afternoon, causing the smoke to move away from the town.
