Top Democrats Plan Marblehead Visit for Picnic

The picnic is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 18.

Many Democratic Party officials and candidates plan to attend the Marblehead Democratic Town Committee’s annual picnic on Monday, Aug. 18.

“This is a very exciting campaign season” said Marilyn J. Segal, Democratic Town Committee Chairwoman. “It is eight years since we elected a new Governor and the Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and State Treasurer’s office are all also open. There are three primary candidates for Governor, three for Lieutenant Governor, two for Attorney General and three for State Treasurer.”

The indoor picnic will be held at VFW Post 2005, 321 West Shore Drive from 5-8 p.m.

Most of the candidates are planning to attend the picnic, Segal said.

“This is a special opportunity to meet, talk to and hear the Democratic candidates in our own home town” said Ron Amon, Vice Chairman of the Committee in an announcement. “We urge all Democrats to come so they can be well informed for the Sept. 9 primary contest.”

The picnic is open to the public.

Some of the candidates planning to attend are U.S. Rep. John Tierney, who was endorsed by the Committee, plus Steve Grossman, State Treasurer and candidate for Governor, candidate for Attorney General Warren Tolman and Maura Healey; Steve Kerrigan, candidate for Lieutenant Governor.

Unopposed incumbents will also be present, including State Rep. Lori Ehrlich, Senator Ben Downing and Auditor Suzanne Bump.

A cocktail hour will be followed by a buffet dinner at 6 pm. Phil Sweeney III will prepare a New England style dinner with fish chowder, lobster, grilled chicken, corn on the cob, salad and patriotic shortcake with strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream.

Tickets are $25 a person with proceeds going to the Edwin L. Goldberg Scholarship Fund.

The Marblehead Democratic Town Committee is composed of 35 registered Democrats who are elected to regular membership by Marblehead voters at the presidential primary election. The committee also has life members and associate members. The committee meets monthly throughout the year.
