5 Things You Need To Know Today: Feb. 17

There is a great opportunity to for you to help someone less fortunate enjoy their high school prom.

1. If you'd like to keep up on Marlborough news, but don't always remember to log on Marlborough Patch, our daily newsletter may be for you! 2. The Newton Country Players’ upcoming production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a beloved story about family and love featuring two real-life sets of siblings and three sets of children getting to take the stage alongside their parents, including Marlborough’s Paul, Julia, and Lauren Chamberlin. Paul Chamberlin plays Jacob, the father of the title character, who appears to have more of a connection with Joseph than his other sons, causing the rift that provides the framework for the musical. Julia and Lauren Chamberlin are in the children’s chorus. This is a play by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice with catchy music, including such well-known songs as “Any Dream Will Do” and “Close Every Door.”  Tickets for adults are $20, and tickets for students and seniors are $18; MassBay Community College students with a student ID get in for free. Group rates are also available. The performances will take place March 9 and 10, and March 16 through 18. The March 18 performance is at 2 p.m.; all other performances are at 8 p.m. All performances will take place at MassBay Community College in Wellesley Hills.

3. The Metrowest Princess Boutique is a project sponsored by the GFWC Marlborough Junior Woman’s Club. The goal is to help qualified girls get to the prom by easing the financial burden for them and their family. All items, dresses, shoes, make-up and accessories are free. The students will have the help of a personal shopper; make-up artists and seamstresses to make the whole outfit perfect for their prom or senior reception. The Metrowest Princess Boutique serves girls in and around the Marlborough area, including Worcester. Organizers work with area high schools to pre-qualify girls to come shop in our boutique. The 2011 Metrowest Princess Boutique will be held on Saturday, March 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School. The program is in need of volunteers to organize donations, organize volunteers, help set up on Friday, March 16, assist girls on March 17, help pack up the gowns at the end of the event, and many more asks. 4. On Saturday, Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., The MetroWest Free Medical Program will be offering free blood pressure screenings at the Russell’s Garden Center Winter Market located at 397 Boston Post Rd., Wayland. Stop by and have your blood pressure taken, meet program volunteers who will explain the free medical care offered by the program, and learn how you may become a volunteer with the program.

5. Works of art by Marlborough public schools students grades kindergarten through 12 will be on display at Whitcomb Middle School for two weeks beginning March 30. The Citywide Art Show tradition started more than 30 years ago, and celebrates the artistic accomplishments of students across the district and demonstrates a progression of skills over time, from kindergarten to Advanced Placement Studio Art works. The display’s opening reception will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 30, in the Whitcomb Middle School back entrance foyer near the library. This event is free to the public, and refreshments will be served. Student works of art will be on display March 31 through April 12. School officials estimate that more than 1,000 pieces of artwork will be on display. Hours to view the works are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on days school is in session. Visitors should check in at the main office to register and receive a guest badge when visiting the school.
