5 Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 27

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1. Today is going to be the first really chilly day of the fall season, says the National Weather Service. Expect a high of 43 degrees with strong gusting winds and a significant dose of rain (up to .75 inches). The real news, however, will come in the form of the white flakes that expected to fall from the sky late tonight. NWS is predicting a minor accumulation of snow, but it shouldn't stick around long as Friday is supposed to have a high in the upper 40s.

2. The River’s Edge Players and the Arts Alliance will present four performances Halloween weekend of Once Upon a Broomstick by Sylvia Ashby. Four performances are being held at the wheel chair accessible Hudson Town Hall auditorium, 78 Main St. on Friday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. The cast is composed of veterans of past River’s Edge Players productions. 4. Two large office lease deals have recently been completed at 325 Donald J. Lynch Blvd. Leased by Class A Property in Marlborough, the companies now occupying the facility are Doble Engineering, an Esco Technologies Company, and SNC Lavalin, one of the largest engineering companies in the world.

5. U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern (MA-03) today announced that he has introduced bipartisan legislation to encourage the practice of gleaning. Gleaning involves ensuring that produce that is not initially harvested does not go to waste. The bill (H.R. 3177, the Hunger Relief Trucking Tax Credit Act), co-sponsored by U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO), would create a 25 cent tax credit for each mile that food is transported for a charity by a donated truck and driver for hunger relief efforts. “Mr. Speaker, today is National Food Day — a full day devoted to all aspects of the American food system: farms, industry, grocers, schools, and most importantly people," said McGovern. "One stated goal of Food Day is to "expand access to food and alleviate hunger." It’s unconscionable that hunger continues to exist in America. Nearly 50 million Americans go hungry every year. Over 17 million — one third — of them are children. The sad truth is hunger is a reality in every community. There is not one part of America, not one Congressional district, that isn’t touched by hunger."
