Marlborough Coronavirus Cases Spiking: Health Data

The rate of new coronavirus cases in Marlborough hit a high not seen in nearly a year on Wednesday.

MARLBOROUGH, MA — The rate of new coronavirus cases in Marlborough reached a high on Wednesday not seen in months, according to data released by the Board of Health.

Over the past seven days, Marlborough was adding 271 new cases per week per 100,000 residents, up from 262 per 100,000 on Monday. The city has also marked four new COVID-19 deaths since the beginning of November. There are also now 148 active cases in the city, the highest dating back early February.

The rise in local cases tracks with an upward trend across Massachusetts. The state added more than 5,400 new cases on Wednesday, the highest daily number dating back to January. There were more than 1,200 residents hospitalized across the state with COVID-19, with about 250 of them in intensive care.

Meanwhile, every county is Massachusetts — and every county in New England — has a high risk of transmission for coronavirus right now, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health experts say the best way to prevent serious illness is to get fully vaccinated and to get a booster shot. A study this week showed the Pfizer booster is effective against the new omicron variant, which was confirmed in Massachusetts over the weekend.
