MARLBOROUGH, MA — The oldest and biggest 'borough around reigns supreme.

Marlborough appears to be the winner of the "Battle of the Boroughs" event held at Wednesday's Worcester Red Sox game — a contest that pit Southborough, Northborough, Westborough and Marlborough to see which community would have the most fans at the game.

According to the WooSox, Marlborough was in the lead as of Thursday with the most tickets sold online, followed by Westborough, Northborough and — last but not least — Southborough

(Middleborough, Attleborough and North Attleborough were not invited to compete, in case you were wondering.)

The contest also acted as a local fundraiser. The WooSox donated some proceeds from tickets sold during the game to a nonprofit in the given community — in this case, the 'boroughs game benefited the Boys & Girls Club of MetroWest.

The WooSox also won on Wednesday, beating the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 2-1.

The "Battle of the Boroughs" was part of the WooSox town takeover series, where the team dedicates home games to communities from across the region. The remaining five takeovers of the season are coming up starting Friday with Southbridge, followed by all the Brookfields on Aug. 27, a combo for Grafton, Mendon and Uxbridge on Aug. 28, Shrewsbury on Aug. 29 and Paxton on Aug. 31.
