Marlborough Student Earns 2024 National Merit Scholarship

MARLBOROUGH, MA — A student from Marlborough is one of the few who received a National Merit scholarship this week.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. (NMSC) revealed a round of 2,500 scholarship winners Wednesday who will receive $2,500 each from NMSC. The scholarship corporation gives out scholarships each spring in separate waves, including awards sponsored by businesses, by colleges and by NMSC itself.

"National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors," the organization said in a news release.

Marlborough resident Akhilsai Damera, a student at Roxbury Latin in Boston, will use his award to study for a career in biomedical engineering in college. Damera was one of 56 students from across Massachusetts who won an NMSC scholarship this week.
