John Alva Willoughby Jr., 74, sadly passed away unexpectedly on July 14, 2023. John was born on November 20, 1948 on Martha’s Vineyard. He was predeceased by his mother, Louise Kimball; father, John Alva Willoughby, Sr. and sister Ursula.
Being born on an island, John very much had a laid back personality. All those who met him would describe him as a kind man with a gentle demeanor, as well as a gentleman. John would gladly lend a hand to help someone in need and would quietly always be present for those who meant the most in his life. A man of few words he was able to express himself as an author, writer, and prolific poet. As a life master bridge player and president of the bridge club he enjoyed his time playing and teaching the game to the next generation of players. John enjoyed playing the piano, completing crossword puzzles, cross-country skiing, and spending time with family. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan following the games and knowing many of the stats. John was an intellect whose children described him as their walking encyclopedia. John will be remembered for his open minded, warm, loving and supportive nature.
John leaves his family to cherish his memory, including his beloved wife of 37 years, Kathryn Broyles-Willoughby, his daughter Katelyn and son-in-law Ben, daughter Emily, son Sean and daughter-in-law Emilie Rose, sister Bebe and husband Charles, brother-in-law Bruce; grandchildren: Scarlett Mai, Rylie, John (Jack), Rose, and a large extended family.
