Where to Get a Christmas Tree

From Balsam Firs to kissing balls and poinsettias, here's where to find all you need to get your home holiday ready

It is December and though we’re not quite to the twelve days of Christmas yet, it is time to start thinking about Christmas trees. There is quite a lot involved in putting up the tree – and there’s no shortage of tradition. Some families put their tree up the day after Thanksgiving. Some wait until Christmas Eve to decorate. Some decorate the whole house, mistletoe and all. For others, it’s just not Christmas without poinsettias on every surface. Still others chose to buy a live tree that can be planted in the ground after spending a week or so decorated and potted indoors.

There are also those who love one type of tree over another. The traditional tree is the Balsam Fir. It has a strong, “Christmasy” smell, but it doesn’t last very long and it drops lots of needles. The other popular tree is the Fraser Fir, which is not quite as fragrant as the Balsam, but it doesn’t drop nearly as many needles and lasts much longer.

Whatever your family’s tree tradition, when you’ve gotten the furniture rearranged and dug the ornaments out of storage; when you’ve untangled the lights and figured out how many bulbs need replacing, here’s where to find your Christmas tree (and all the other fixings) on Island.
