Bellforge Arts Center Seeks to Honor Town Historian Richard DeSorgher with Classroom Naming

The Bellforge Arts Center has announced a campaign to raise $50,000 to name a classroom in its new facility in honor of Richard DeSorgher, Medfield’s beloved Town Historian, educator, and lifelong resident until recent years.

DeSorgher, often referred to as “Mr. Medfield History,” has dedicated his life to preserving and sharing the town’s rich heritage. Through his books, articles, and long-running newspaper column, he has chronicled Medfield’s stories and people, ensuring that generations to come will understand and appreciate the community’s past.

A graduate of Medfield High School, DeSorgher went on to teach social studies at Medfield Junior High and English at Medfield High School, inspiring countless students with his passion for history and storytelling. Beyond the classroom, he has been deeply involved with the Medfield Historical Society and has contributed to several Massachusetts state commissions, making him a respected authority on local and state history.

“Richard’s lifelong commitment to education and history has left an indelible mark on Medfield,” said Jean Mineo, Executive Director, Bellforge Arts Center. “Naming a classroom in his honor feels especially fitting — it celebrates both his dedication to teaching and his enduring role as the town’s historian.”

The Bellforge Arts Center, now in the public phase of its fundraising campaign, envisions the classroom as a space that will inspire future generations of learners, creators, and community members — much like DeSorgher himself has done throughout his life.

Community members and supporters are invited to contribute to this special $50,000 naming campaign to help make the Richard DeSorgher Classroom a reality. Donations of all sizes will help celebrate a man whose passion for Medfield’s history has enriched the town for decades.
