Hannah Adams Exhibit, Sat., April 29, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Medfield Public Library

Hannah Adams (1755-1831) was born in Medfield and was the first woman in America to make a living as a professional author, writing books on comparative religion and early American history.

Be sure to stop by the Medfield Public Library during Medfield History Weekend (Saturday only, free) to see the Hannah Adams Exhibit which will include copies of her publications and facsimiles of her papers being held at the Boston Athenaeum.

You can also view historical books and documents (dating back to the 1800s) of the Hannah Adams Woman’s Club (est. 1894), the oldest continuously running women’s club in America and still meeting in Medfield. Stop by the exhibit and learn more about the woman Medfield Town Historian Richard DeSorgher calls “Medfield’s Most Famous Female.”

Fun fact: Did you know Hannah Adams was the first person to petition Congress for “a general law to secure authors the copy-right of their publications,” which then led to the first federal copyright law being passed in 1790? Stop by the exhibit to hear the story behind the story!
