Fire Log: Train Fire on Friday

Medford fire log, March 16 to March 22

About 100 people had to be evacuated and numerous small fires along the tracks had to be put out when an MBTA train caught fire on Friday.

It took about an hour for fire crews from Medford and Malden to clear the scene of the blaze, which was called in at about 2:48 p.m. Friday, according to a fire report written by Deputy fire Chief Steve Howe.

Firefighters had to wait until power to the rail lines was cut before they extinguished the fire. About 100 people on board the orange line train were evacuated to staging area where there was an ambulance and transfer buses, Howe wrote.

The train was on the tracks between Malden Center and Wellington Stations, near Kappy's Liquor in Medford.

The disabled train clogged the northbound tracks, forcing the MBTA to run shuttle service from Wellington to points north.
