Four occupants left unhurt, put out quickly.
A fire at 44 Sherwood Road caused heavy damage to the 2 1/2 story home, but was put out quickly and no one was hurt, fire officials said.
Medford Fire was called to the home at about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday where they found heavy smoke and fire, Deputy fire Chief Martin Cunniff said.
The fire is believed to have started in the fireplace area on the first floor and travelled up along the chimney to the second floor and attic, Cunniff said. A hole had to be made in the roof for ventilation and a hose was run from a hydrant up the street closer to Governors Avenue. The fire was put out within 30 minutes of the call.
