News:

SATURDAY, 12:45 p.m. UPDATE: The city has posted an update on their website regarding Medford's response to the winter storm. Here is a summary of the update:

• As of 8 a.m. National Grid had reported just two residential power outages in Medford.
• The city has 108 plows at its disposal including city plows and private contractors. The city expects the snow and high winds to end at around 3 p.m. Saturday.
• Medford Public Schools Superintendent Roy Belson will make a determination about whether or not Medford will have school Monday by Sunday at 12 p.m.
• Mayor Michael J. McGlynn "has directed the school and building departments to evaluate the snow load on school roofs and take the necessary action."
• The city reminded residents that throwing snow back into streets is "creating a public safety hazard, which is subject to a fine."
• Medford "will continue its efforts into next week until the job is complete."

SATURDAY 12 p.m. UPDATE:

The travel ban remains in effect and Gov. Deval Patrick is expected to update the media at about 1:30 p.m.

The state fire marshal was just doing a press briefing on TV and was reminding people that clearing out vents from the snowfall should be a priority.

On Facebook, we have learned that Whole Foods on Mystic Valley Parkway will be open from 12:30 to 6 p.m. today and expects to have regular Sunday hours.

SATURDAY 9 a.m. UPDATE: 

There sure is a lot of snow out there this morning, Medford, isn't there?

The good news is that so far Medford has been spared the issues with power outages many are seeing across the state. National Grid's outage map is showing fewer than five total outages in the city right now.

The statewide travel ban remains in effect until further notice, according to several reports. In addition, MBTA service will continue to be suspended throughout Saturday.

On Twitter, NE Fire Buff's Mike Moura reports that 90 percent of side roads in Medford are still yet to be plowed and as of about 8:30 a.m. there is a fire engine stuck somewhere in the city.

• Gov. Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency for Massachusetts around 12:30 p.m. Friday.

• A snow emergency will go into effect in Medford starting at 8 a.m. Friday until further notice. More information available here.
• During declared snow emergencies, on the designated streets cars can be ticketed and towed. The following streets are designated as EMERGENCY ARTERIES: Boston Avenue, Central Avenue, College Avenue from George Street to Boston Avenue, Forest Street, Fulton Street, George Street, Governors Avenue, Grove Street, Hancock Street, Harvard Avenue, Harvard Street, High Street, Lawrence Road, Main Street, Medford Street, Mystic Avenue from Main Street to Crescent Street, Playstead Road, Riverside Avenue, Salem Street, Spring Street, Washington Street, Webster Street, Willis Avenue, Winthrop Street and Woburn Street.

Cancellations and Closings: 

• Gov. Deval Patrick has signed an executive order banning vehicle travel except for public safety, public works and other vital services after 4 p.m. Friday. More information available here.
• Tolls on the Massachusetts Turnpike will be stopped after 2 p.m. Friday.
• Medford Public Schools are closed Friday and school buildings are also closed Saturday.
• Waste Management will begin collecting trash starting at 6 a.m. Friday rather than the usual 7 a.m. so crews can complete their routes by 1 p.m.
• The Medford Public Library will close at 12:30 p.m. Friday.
• The Medford Senior Center will be closed Friday.
• Mystic Valley Charter School will close at 12 p.m. Friday.
• MBTA subway and commuter rail services will be shut down after 3:30 p.m. Friday.
• Whole Foods on Route 16 will close at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
• All Tufts Univeristy campuses and buildings will be closed Friday.
• The Valentine Ice Cream Social sponsored by the Medford Family Network at McGlynn Middle School from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday has been postponed to Saturday, Feb. 16.
• Meals on Wheels will be delivered as scheduled Friday.
• Massachusetts state courthouses will be closed at 3 p.m. Friday. All first day jurors scheduled for Springfield, Woburn, Somerville, Boston & Worcester are canceled.
• Medford Boys & Girls Club is canceled for Friday.
• The Medford Democratic Caucus scheduled for Saturday has been canceled.
