MELROSE, MA — A chemical gas produced by the mixture of drain cleaners prompted a hazmat response on Franklin Street Wednesday night. Two people were sent to the hospital and both have been discharged, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to a medical call for a man who was nauseous and felt like his lungs were burning. One of the responders evacuated the three-family building and called for the state hazmat team.

Several emergency response vehicles lined Franklin Street while a hazmat team metered the house. The chemicals eventually went down the drain, and things were wrapped up by about 11 p.m.

"Everything was mitigated and returned to normal by the time they cleared the scene," Melrose Fire Captain Peter Grant told Patch.

Grant said anyone who feels there may be a hazmat situation should call 911.
