Maya Jamaleddine Becomes City's First Muslim Elected Official
Jamaleddine, sworn in Monday night to a standing ovation, is also the first elected official in Massachusetts to wear a hijab.

MELROSE, MA — Maya Jamaleddine made history Monday night, becoming the first Muslim elected official in Melrose and the state's first elected official to wear a hijab.
Jamaleddine was sworn in before the City Council meeting. The Council and crowd of supporters gave her a standing ovation.
Jamaleddine is replacing Kate Lipper-Garabedian, who next week will be sworn into the State House as the new state representative for the 32nd Middlesex District. Jamaleddine was the only at-large candidate left off the Council in November's election, but she received more than 4,000 votes, which easily satisfied the threshold to take over for Lipper-Garabedian.
