Mayor's Math Challenge Cup Winners Honored at School Committee

First-ever challenge required teams to complete math problems individually and as a team

Winners of the first annual Mayor's Cup Math Challenge earned their moment in the spotlight at last week's School Committee meeting.

The challenge required a team of fourth graders and a team of fifth graders from each elementary school to first complete a set of math problems individually and then work collaboratively on a series of advanced math problems.

The fourth grade champions came from the Hoover School, represented by James Talbot, Sebastian Roizner, Calvin White, Patrick Donohue, Peter Wiesen and Simon Stringer.

The fifth grade champions came from the Lincoln School, represented by Devin Mullett, Chris Schwarze, Matt Oteri, Nate Shu and Nich Chan. Principal Brent Conway said fellow team member Kevin Bristol could not attend the School Committee meeting due to a baseball game.

Each team will keep the cup at their respective schools until next year's challenge.
