MELROSE, MA — Gov. Charlie Baker was in town Monday night attending a Monica Medeiros fundraiser event. "An evening with Governor Charlie Baker" was held at the Laurel Street home of two Medeiros supports, a Facebook page for the event said.

"I am honored and humbled that the nation’s most popular Governor, Charlie Baker, came out [Monday] night to support me for Mayor of Melrose," Medeiros told Patch.

Baker often polls as the most popular governor in America despite being a Republican in one of the bluest states in the country.

Medeiros, a Republican, is running for mayor against Democratic State Rep. Paul Brodeur after the two made it through a preliminary race last month. Melrose elections are nonpartisan.

The suggested donations Monday ranged from $100 "bronze sponsors" to $1,000 "platinum sponsors" for Medeiros's campaign, according to the page.

"Governor Baker is supporting me because he recognizes that experience equals results, Medeiros said. He recognizes that fourteen years of experience at the local level on the school committee and Board of Aldermen makes me the best person to ensure that the citizens of Melrose have strong public safety, great public schools, updated infrastructure, and that this community is open and affordable to everyone who wants to live here.

"From my work with Charlie Baker at the state level, he also recognizes that I am a leader who brings people together to get the job done. I am honored to have Governor Baker’s support, and I look forward to working with Governor Charlie Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito on improving our education system, addressing critical transportation issues, and working with him to better collaborate with other cities and towns on regional initiatives to improve the quality of life for the people of Melrose."
