Melrose Coronavirus: City Sees First 3 Cases

Health Director Ruth Clay said to expect more positive cases as testing increases.

MELROSE, MA — There are three confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in Melrose, city officials announced Tuesday afternoon.

The Health Department was notified of the cases Monday. They represent the first three cases of COVID-19 in the city.

The people are in isolation.

Health Director Ruth Clay said to expect more positive cases.

"As more tests are performed, more positive cases can be identified," Clay said." As of March 23 at 4 p.m., there were 777 confirmed cases in Massachusetts. That’s a jump of 131 from the previous day’s report."

Mayor Paul Brodeur said people should take the news as an opportunity to make sure they are observing proper social distancing.

"While we anticipated the arrival of positive COVID-19 cases in Melrose for some time now, today’s news highlights how this pandemic is truly spreading everywhere," Brodeur said.
