Melrose Man Charged With Killing Dog Pleads Not Guilty

Mayor Paul Brodeur said Adam Crook's "behavior is offensive and disturbing."

MELROSE, MA - A Melrose man who authorities said bashed his dog to death with a rock before burying it in his backyard pleaded not guilty. Adam Crook, 44, was released on personal recognizance after his arraignment Tuesday at Malden District Court.

Crook was also ordered not to have any animals, including giving up any in his possession.

Prosecutors said Crook hit his dog, Derby, in the head with a rock multiple times. When he was certain Derby was dead, he buried the dog in back of his Mount Zion Road home.

"This behavior is offensive and disturbing," Mayor Paul Brodeur said.

Police Chief Mike Lyle said Crook's
"alleged actions are truly disturbing."

The next court date in Crook's case is Jan. 14.
