Melrose MCAS Results: District 'Still Adapting To The Changes'

MELROSE, MA — Melrose Public Schools is still trying to get used to the new MCAS testing, but the district is happy with how things are going in the midst of change.

"Given that this is year two of the new MCAS, we are still adapting to the changes," Superintendent Cyndy Taymore told Patch in an email. "Having said that, we are pleased with the results and the growth we are seeing as we make adjustments to curriculum and instruction in response to the new expectations by DESE."

This year was the first time for 10th-graders taking the next-generation tests in English and math. Seventy-six percent of 10th-graders met or exceeded expectations in math and 68 percent did so in math. They were significantly lower than last year's numbers — particularly in math, where 96 percent of students scored advanced or proficient last year — but comparisons are not very revealing with so many changes.

In grades 3-8, 73 percent of students met of exceeded expectations in English and 65 percent in math, small increases in both categories.

It was also the first time for next-generation science tests in grades five and eight. Sixty-three percent of fifth-grade students met or exceeded expectations in science, while 60 percent of eighth-grade students did the same.

Eighty-nine percent of 10th-graders were advanced of proficient in science, a five-percent increase over last year.

"If we have any concern, it is that the change over to a total online exam has proven a challenge for some of our learners," Taymore said.

The Horace Mann School was one of 67 schools of recognition due to high growth and significantly exceeding its target. Taymore said the district was "particularly proud" of the school.
