Melrose Planning Special Anniversary Event
The city is celebrating its 175th anniversary of becoming an independent municipality.

MELROSE, MA — The city will host a celebration in honor of its 175th anniversary later this spring, Mayor Jen Grigoraitis announced on Wednesday.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 3 at Melrose Memorial Hall on Main Street. Its $4,000 budget is paid for through American Rescue Plan Act funds. Grigoraitis described the upcoming celebration as a family-friendly "birthday party” for the city that will feature exhibits on local history, an interactive and collaborative community art project led by Follow Your Art Community Studios, a recognition of past and present volunteers and officials in Melrose civic life, and cake. Grigoraitis lead the nine-person planning committee, and also includes other leaders of government entities and residents.
The committee is soliciting additional ideas for the event, and encourage community members who wish to provide input to contact them at mayorsoffice@cityofmelrose.org or 781-979-4440.Melrose became an independent town when it separated from Malden in 1850. It became a city in 1900.
