Melrose Police Warn Against Phone Scam

Melrose PD has received reports of calls made by police impostors soliciting for money.

MELROSE, MA — The Police Department is warning residents of a telephone scam in which the callers are falsely accusing people of missing jury duty, and asking them to pay a fine for doing so.

According to Melrose PD, it has received multiple reports that the perpetrator is using a number that appears to be coming from the police department.

“This is a scam, Melrose PD will NEVER call a citizen to inform them of jury duty or a missed jury duty,” The department said in a statement.

The department added that it would also never ask for money over the phone for something like missed jury duty. It is advising residents who receive the call to not disclose any personal information, and to report the instance to the Melrose PD’s business phone number t 781-665-1212.
