Melrose U10 Girls Win District 10 Championship

The Melrose U10-1 Girls Hockey team cruised to a District 10 Championship with big wins over Reading and Medford.

The Melrose U10-1 Girls Hockey team cruised to a District 10 Championship with big wins over Reading and Medford.

Melrose 6, Reading 0

Melrose opened up the District tournament with a win over Reading. Melrose got on the board in the first period when Emma Lynch-Galvin scored assisted by Shannon Burke. Carolyn Mahoney followed up assisted by Brett Mullett as time was winding down in the period. Mullett added one of her own unassisted in the second. Lynch-Galvin added another in the period assisted by Samantha Porazinski. Burke and Mahoney each added their own unassisted goal in the third period to insure the win.

Courtney O’Connor earned the shut out in goal with the help of solid defense by Jill Mattucci, Maggie O’Donnell, Lexie Turner and Marina DiBiasio who eliminated Reading’s offensive attack.

Melrose 8 Medford 1

The Flynn Rink hosted the District Final against Medford on Friday, Feb. 3. The girls wowed the home crowd with an explosive offense and solid defense. Lexie Turner opened up the Melrose scoring late in the first period with a fiery shot assisted by Carolyn Mahoney and Emma Lynch-Galvin.

Carolyn Mahoney added the first of her four goals of the evening a minute later putting Melrose ahead by 2 at the end of the first period. Samantha Porazinski and Mahoney each scored in the first two minutes of the second, establishing the Melrose girls dominance. Shannon Burke scored the 5th goal assisted by Brett Mullett and Marina DiBiasio. Mahoney added one before Medford was able to get on the board late in the second period.

Goalie Courtney O’Connor made some incredible saves throughout to keep Medford out of the game. Defensive players, Jill Mattucci, Maggie O’Donnell and Lexie Turner were once again able to shut down the Medford offense. In the third period, Mahoney and Burke added a pair of goals to complete the championship run.
