I’ve attended many city events and heard mayoral candidate Paul Brodeur speak. Paul is not only a speaker, he’s also a listener, a facilitator, and a communicator — all abilities critical in the role of mayor.

When our neighbors on Brazil Street were most-suffering, Paul reached out to engineers and water infrastructure experts to talk, and to listen. During these conversations, Paul learned of an infrastructure grant for which Melrose was eligible but no one had yet applied. He informed City Hall to apply in order to lay the foundation for future success. His willingness to talk came at a time when City Hall wasn’t so successful.

Paul comes to the race with 10 years of experience as our State House Representative and nine years of experience as Melrose alderman, including the president of the board, where he focused on sustainable growth and fiscal responsibility. Paul knows our city in and out and he knows how to best serve all of its people.

Paul has never met a stranger. A good mayor must relate to people easily in an informal setting, just as well as in a formal one. And a great mayor needs to establish relationships not only with his constituents, but city department heads and employees that keep things running. This is Paul. He personally and promptly responds to phone calls, emails, and texts. If he doesn’t have the answer, he knows who to ask, how to find out, and he follows up. Paul is able to facilitate the best solutions, make compromises, and allow everyone to feel heard and valued.

Paul unites people. This is an essential ability of our new mayor. Paul is mindful of our older and younger citizens alike, of those new to Melrose and those like him who have spent their entire lives here. He gets people excited. Of all the mayoral candidates, Paul has the best chance at bringing Melrose together with a common vision.

As a result of all of Paul’s talking (and listening), he has developed detailed plans for Melrose. He doesn’t simply say, “things should be better,” or “we need to be innovative.” He has the innovative plans ready to execute.

Check out paulbrodeur.com for more about why Paul is the best prepared to lead our city at this very important time. And I hope you’ll join me in voting for Paul Brodeur for mayor in the primary election on Tuesday, September 17.
