Man Turns Himself In At Station On Warrant, Then Allegedly Attacks Officers
Tuesday, May 25, 11:52 p.m. A man walked into the Melrose Police Station and said he was turning himself in on a default warrant. Melrose Police Lt. Mark DeCroteau said when the officer in charge went to open the door, Stephen Swasey, 22, 24 Park St., Melrose, charged into the station, throwing his arms forward and pushing the officer in charge back. Several other officers had to restrain Swasey, DeCroteau said, taking him to the ground and handcuffing him. Swasey was placed under arrest for the default warrant and additional charges of assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.

Wednesday, May 26, 10:52 p.m. Melrose Police received several 911 calls about vandalism damage to RD's Deli and Market on Franklin Street. DeCroteau said police had a report from an eyewitness who saw two people run away from the front of the store after attempting to break the glass on the front door. The Melrose Police K-9 Unit and other officers responded and saw that the glass on the front door was broken, but not shattered all the way through.
DeCroteau said the "Jony" the police dog tracked and led officers to a hammer a short distance away, and then to a screwdriver also not far away from the store. The dog led officers across the street to Marvin Road and the train platform at the MBTA Melrose Highlands commuter rail stop, where police discovered two 15-year-olds, one male and one female, hiding underneath the train platform. The eyewitness identified both juveniles as the people who ran away from the store after smashing the front door glass, DeCroteau said. They were placed under arrest on charges of malicious destruction of property worth more than $250; attempting to commit a breaking and entering in the nighttime; and possession of burglarious instruments.

Man Comes Home To Discover Burglar In House
Saturday, May 29, 10:25 p.m. A Washington Street resident called police after arriving home and discovering a burglar in his house. DeCroteau said that the resident heard a noise in the house when arrived home and then saw a white man dressed in dark clothing, who ran away once he saw the resident. Police searched the area with assistance from the Melrose Police K-9 Unit and Malden Police K-9 Unit, but could not find the burglar. DeCroteau said the victim is compiling a list of what's missing from the house and that the case remains under investigation.
