Why Go: Melrose marks Memorial Day on Monday, May 28, 2012 with events and ceremonies. Here's the schedule of events:

  • 8 a.m.: Decoration of the Graves,
  • 9 a.m.: Veteran’s Breakfast,
  • 11 a.m.: Flag Retirement Ceremony,
  • 11 a.m.: Memorial Day Religious Ceremonies,
  • Noon: Memorial Day Cookout,
  • 1 p.m.: Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremonies, WWII/Korean Memorial, Main Street

Why Go: Join the Milano Center in making a lovely springtime craft brought to you by Hallmark Health VNA and Hospice. Cost is $3 and you can sign up at the Milano Reception desk or call 781-662-6886—20 participants needed to proceed with this program.

Why Go: Mayor Robert J. Dolan once again invites Melrose youngsters to participate in the 10th annual Public Works Day. Melrose residents are also invited to bring their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, ages 8 or younger, to join in the event between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. The rain date will be June 1. This year’s DPW Day will have a rodeo theme, and students will have the opportunity to win a sheriff’s badge by answering questions about the environment. Children attending Public Works Day will take an interactive tour of the City Yard and learn about street cleaning and road repair, water and sewer maintenance, recycling, snow removal, tree trimming, composting, and more. The recreational area across the street from the City Yard will be available for those who would like to pack a lunch or snack.

Why Go: The Friends of Fells Annual Meeting features a slide presentation by Friends of Fells and Medford Historical Society: How the Lantern Slides of George Davenport helped Create the Fells. Meeting is in the Oak Grove Village Community Center, 12 Island Hill Ave. (Main Street at Melrose/Malden line). The event is free and refreshments will be served.
