Voter Turnout, Breakdown In Melrose Preliminary Mayoral Election

Roughly 40 percent of Melrose voters turned out Tuesday — far fewer than the override and just over half of last November's election.

MELROSE, MA — Roughly 40 percent of Melrose voters turned out Tuesday to decide which two candidates will continue their run to become the next mayor of Melrose. Unofficial results counted 8,023 votes in Tuesday's preliminary election.

Patch was unable to get the number of registered voters in Melrose from the Elections Department Tuesday, but there were 20,191 as of last November's state elections. Based on that number, 39.7 percent of Melrose voters made their voice heard during the preliminaries.

Voters pushed State Rep. Paul Brodeur and Alderman-at-Large Monica Medeiros into the Nov. 5 election. You can see the voting breakdown by precinct below.

Tuesday's turnout was far better than the 2017 elections for the Board of Aldermen and School Committee. In that one, 5,788 voters made it out for a 29.4 percent turnout. The 2018 State Primary had a similar turnout with 5,759.

April's override special election saw 10,954 votes. The state election in November saw 14,578, which was an astounding 72.2 percent turnout.
