A look back at the past week in Melrose

Every Sunday, we'll run a week in review, highlighting the top stories from around Melrose in the past week.

Leading off the news is the launch of Melrose Patch. City Hall had a busy week too, with the city receiving word that the state officially designated it a 'green community.' Also, FEMA extended the deadline to apply for flood-related reimbursement and assistance.

In school news, the School Committee approved a Beebe School lease agreement with the Anova School; a middle school football team is set to hit the field this fall; and the author of 'Freak' read to middle schoolers and talked about bullying. Also, the Boston Bruins are coming to Melrose as part of the city's summer recreation program and Melrose High School juniors attended the prom.

Melrose Patch highlighted two relatively new businesses in the city — Gryphon Studio and The Beauty Cafe — and took in Too Human at the Melrose Public Library. Columnist and 'moodler' Kathy Shiels Tully explained why Melrose is the 'write' place for her and Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator Kara Showers passed on summertime tips for parents.

Memorial Day celebrations started on Friday with the annual middle school assembly. Check Melrose Patch tomorrow for photos from today's Memorial Day parade and ceremonies.
