Milford Launches New Dual Language Learning Program

Students will receive half of their daily learning in English and the other half in Spanish.

MILFORD, MA — Milford Public Schools has officially launched a new dual language learning program for its students.

La Comunidad, the school district's new dual-language learning program, will begin with two kindergarten classrooms at Memorial Elementary School, according to a news release. Students who are enrolled will receive half of their daily learning in English and the other half in Spanish.

Kindergartners throughout the school district had the opportunity to enroll. The first class is 44 students, who will receive dual language instruction through fifth grade.

The district also plans to expand the new program to more grades in the next few years.

Milford teachers and the administration worked together to launch La Comunidad over the past two years. The program is spearheaded by Julia Latino, Assistant Director of Multilingual Learner and Dual Language Programming for the school district.

“The Memorial community is excited and honored toopen the doors to the first dual language program in Milford," said Lisa Burns, principal of Memorial School. "La Comunidad’s successful beginning is the result of meticulous planning and dedication from our educational leaders."
