Stores like Lowe's and Home Depot have often been targeted by organized theft rings whose members steal pricey items like nail guns and "smart" light bulbs and then sell them on the black market. Bellingham police in 2018 arrested a Brockton man who led police to a cache of tens of thousands of dollars worth of stolen Lowe's and Home Depot merchandise.

Federal prosecutors in 2020 said a lone thief stole thousands of "smart" light bulbs from big-box home stores across New England, earning about $400,000 from reselling them on eBay.
