Police De-Escalate Armed Confrontation At Milford Home

A man grabbed a large kitchen knife and threatened to kill the officers, according to Milford PD.

MILFORD, MA — Milford police officers safely de-escalated and resolved an armed standoff on Monday evening, according to police.

When officers responded to a home on Congress Street for a well-being check shortly before 7 p.m., they encountered Darren Esslinger, who believed they were there to kill him. Esslinger then grabbed a large kitchen knife and threatened to kill them, according to Milford PD.

Officers successfully de-escalated the situation and arrested Esslinger without any injuries.

Esslinger is now facing a number of charges and was held on $10,000 bail. He was charged with assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, threat to commit a crime and disorderly conduct.

“I’d like to commend the officers and clinicians of our Family Services Unit for their professionalism and restraint,” said Chief Robert Tusino. “So often we hear tragic outcomes to volatile situations such as this one.”
