Eagle Scout Honors Friend with Blood Drive

Robert MacKay, a Milton Academy student, organized a blood drive after a friend was diagnosed with cancer and needed a blood transfusion.

The American Red Cross Blood Drive at the Milton Public Library on Thursday, August 19 isn't just another blood drive, but rather the reaction of a local Eagle Scout to the news a close friend was in need of a blood transfusion.

Roberts MacKay, a 17-year-old Milton Academy student, got the idea to organize a blood drive for his Eagle Scout project after a friend from his hometown of Cold Spring Harbor, NY was diagnosed with cancer.

"Having a friend like that is a little scary, but I feel like you have to do something," MacKay said.

For the last month, MacKay has been going through the planning and promoting of the drive, which will take place from 1 to 6 p.m. on Thursday.

With the backing of his troop and Barbara Marcotte, a recruitment executive for the American Red Cross, MacKay got to work.

Among the easiest parts of the project was securing the location at the library, according to MacKay. The time consuming portion of the planning came while making contacts and posting fliers to promote the drive.

Now that the planning is complete, MacKay will rely on his troop and family members to help run the event in conjunction with the Red Cross. MacKay will coordinate setup and tear down as well as serving lunch and even providing childcare.

Interested donors who need a ride can even be transported by a complimentary taxi service. MacKay recruited two adults to volunteer and pick up donors. To set up a ride, call 631-338-8810.

Though MacKay doesn't call Milton his fulltime home, he has developed an affinity for the town in his time at Milton Academy.  Aside from helping people like his friend, MacKay knows he is assisting the community.

"The biggest thing for me is giving back," MacKay said.
