Milton Garden Club Announces New Grant Program

The Milton Garden Club will be awarding up to $1,000 in community grants for conservation, beautification or service-oriented projects in Milton. The new grant program is open to anyone who works, lives or attends school in Milton and will replace the club’s annual scholarship.

Requests for the grant will be accepted until May 1, 2013 and must uphold the MGC's "founding principles of the Milton Garden Club, which include conservation, horticulture, historic preservation, education and civic beautification." 
Proposals from students, teachers or residents of any age will be considered, as long as they primarily benefit the town of Milton.

“It’s not a requirement, but we’d like to see the funding benefit the students or the schools,” said Scholarship Chair, Rachel Wohanka, via a press release.

Wahanka explained that the scholarship was disbanded due to lack of interest.

“High school seniors are busy, and our criteria were too rigid and the pool of eligible candidates was too narrow," said Wohanka. "We think the new grant program will increase the number of applicants and scope of the projects. We look forward to seeing the ideas applicants submit and are excited to assist in the process of making the projects come to fruition on behalf of Milton.”

There is no minimum amount to request for the grant and depending on the scope of work, more than one grant could be awarded.

The proposed projects must be planned for completion by June 1, 2014. Winners will be chosen by Garden Club board members and will be notified in June, 2013.

The Milton Garden Club, which was founded in 1924, holds two fundraisers annually, the December Greens Sale and the May Perennial Sale. This year's Perennial Sale will take place Saturday, May 11, at the Milton Public Library.
