Milton Superintendent Releases Statement on Conn. Elementary School Shooting

Following an incident where nearly 30 people, including at least 18 children were killed in a Newtown, Conn. elementary school, Milton Public Schools Superintendent Mary Gormley released a statement about school safety and how parents can discuss the tragedy with their children.

“We would like to assure our parents and guardians safety is a priority of the Milton Public Schools,” Gormley wrote on blog.miltonps.org. “We treat each and every student here in the Milton Public Schools as if they were our own, and we regularly schedule lockdown drills, fire drills and other various safety precautions throughout the year, in coordination with the Milton Police and Fire Department.”

In the statement, which was released this afternoon, Gormley said teachers and staff members were told not to discuss the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Milton schools today.

“It is your decision as their parents and guardians how to discuss this issue with your children in the home setting,” Gormley wrote.

Gormley said she would be in touch with Maria Trozzi, a nationally recognized grief expert who has worked with the MPS in the past.

The superintendent also shared an article from the NASP (National Association of School Psychologists) about how to speak to children about violence.
