Week in Review: August 16-22

A look back at the happenings this week in Milton.

I hate to admit it, but the signs are beginning to mount that the summer is ending. School news is becoming more prevalent and summer favorites are wrapping up.

Sunday, the Cunningham Pool locked its gates for the season, but on Tuesday the biggest sign of summer, the band concert series ended. Ken Lodge and the Baron Hugo Orchestra took to the town gazebo for a well-attended show that was sponsored by Senator Brian A. Joyce.

This week, Milton Public Schools distributed bus passes to all registered students. Students riding the bus must have their passes to ride.

Also in school news, we heard from Skyler Abrams this week. The incoming senior at Milton High was one of 26 students to participate in the Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Summer Business Institute at Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business. Abrams heard lectures from top business professors on a range of topics including networking, finance and entrepreneurship.

As the town prepares for the September Town Meeting, the Warrant Committee has been meeting frequently. On Wednesday, the committee was joined by Planning Board Chair Alex Whiteside for a discussion of Article 2, a zoning change that would limit the height of accessory structures. The committee voted to wait to make a recommendation, giving the Planning Board time to discuss the change further.

Though it doesn't have to do with the end of the summer, this week was an important week for Patch. Milton Patch turned three months old on Tuesday, and the company grew to 100 sites in nine states. To celebrate the milestone, we took a look at the top 10 features and moments in the past three months in Milton. Also as part of the 100th Patch celebration all employees were given the chance to volunteer in their communities. Three local Patchers volunteered at the Milton Public Library. The experience showed me the value of volunteers at the library.
