CHESTNUT HILL, MA — Stores are decorated for Christmas, stocked-up for holiday shoppers and the Black Friday advertisements are out. For those who are ready to nab those deals, and aren't afraid to bust some doors, here's your guide for the area.

The Shops at Chestnut Hill and Copley Place in Boston will open at 8 a.m. on Black Friday. That too late for your taste? Outside of Newton, most Simon-owned malls in the commonwealth (Burlington, Peabody, South Shore Plaza) will open at 12:30 a.m. on Black Friday, although mall doors will open at 12:01 a.m.

Black Friday: 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Holiday retail sales could top $1 trillion for the first time this year, according to eMarketer. That would represent a 3.8 percent increase over last year's holiday shopping season from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31.

Not everyone is gun ho about the spending spree.

REI, which has a store in the Fenway area, plans to close on Black Friday for the fifth year in a row, and it's encouraging shoppers and employees to sign up for a 52-week action plan of "small steps" to curb carbon emissions and live more energy-efficient lives.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation is taking the cue and pointing out a few hikes folks can take.

“Go Green on Black Friday” hikes range from light to moderately strenuous levels of difficulty, and are best for families with children ages 10 and older, officials said in a release. Details about hike locations, difficulty, length, terrain, and tips regarding proper clothing are listed on DCR’s website at www.mass.gov/dcr.
