NEWTON, MA — Humpty Dumpty is back and so are the children, but the official ribbon-cutting to celebrate the moment at the new Cabot Elementary will be, 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19.

After two years of renovation and expansion the Cabot school building welcomed students back. The project was part of the Newton Public School district’s long range strategic plan to address rising enrollment and update its aging buildings.

The Cabot School was built in 1929 and an addition was built in 1956 that added four classrooms and the gym. But by 2016 teachers had offices in closets and the population had outgrown the building and the gym.

The Massachusetts School Building Authority agreed to subsidize about 30 percent of the nearly $50 million renovation replacement project. The rest was funded thanks to a 2013 tax override that also provided funding for the rebuilding of Angier and Zervas elementary schools.

Since 2017, when the project started, students have been holding classes at the district's swing space, the Carr School.

At the event Thursday, the MSBA, city officials and school administrators will celebrate the opening of the building and welcome students, faculty, and staff to the expanded and renovated space.

MA State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, who recently indicated she was considering a run for Rep. Joe Kennedy's 4th District seat, will be speaking.
