Civil War Soldiers Set Up Camp in Newton
The Jackson Homestead became home base for re-enactors bringing the 28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry to life over the weekend.

Newton stepped back in time last weekend as the Civil War-era 28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry set up camp at Jackson Homestead.
Guests wandered the homestead grounds, talking with re-enactors and observing life in the camp.
“Civil War Encampment at Jackson was marvelous,” Mary H. Sullivan said in a comment on Newton Patch. “Enjoyed talking with the participants and learning of conditions during that time. Enjoyed greatly.”

The encampment also served as a tribute to John Ryan, a Newton resident who served as a private in Company C of the 28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. According to a city press release, Ryan was injured five times during the Civil War and kept a journal of his experiences. Ryan’s civil service continued with time in the Seventh Calvary during the Indian Wars and, ultimately, he served in the Newton Police Department, rising to the rank of captain.
