Five Things You Need to Know Today: Aug. 12

A reception for a photo exhibit, a walk with Historic Newton and some local open houses.

1. Reception at L'Aroma. Communities Without Borders will hold at  for its new photo exhibit. The reception starts at 2 p.m. and will feature members of Communities Without Borders speaking about their experiences working in Zambia. 

2. Historic Newton walks. Historic Newton will host a walk today of the Hobart Estates, an Olmstead-designed subdivision centered on Hobart Road. To join the walk and learn more about the area and its historic homes, meet at the northeast corner of Grant Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue (the carriage road) at 2 p.m.

3. History of water pumping. The Waterworks Museum in Brighton (just over the Newton line at 2450 Beacon St.) will host Marcis Kempe, a MWRA engineer, to talk about the history of water pumping and how tools have evolved to help people move water. The event will start at noon and admission is free.
