Five Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 8

The Columbus Day holiday, National Fire Prevention Week and movie filming.

1. Columbus Day. The Newton Public Schools, Newton city offices, Newton Free Library, Newton Senior Center, post offices and banks will all be closed today for the Columbus Day holiday. Most retail shops, restaurants, bars and supermarkets are open, but check with the store before heading out.

2. Fire safety. Did you know it's National Fire Prevention Week? Learn more about fire safety and fire prevention training events in your area.

3. Movie filming. ABC will be filming a TV movie at Newton City Hall this week, so make sure you plan some extra time if you're traveling in that area. Crews will begin setting up today and filming will take place tomorrow. Check out our "week ahead" story for more details on parking.

4. Last chance to voice your opinion. The Newton Community Preservation Committee is looking for residents' feedback on guidelines for Community Preservation Act-funded projects. Residents can voice their opinion on the guidelines with an online survey, which is open through tomorrow. (If you miss the chance to vote online, you can mail comments until Oct. 19.)

5. Live chat reminder. Republican Fourth Congressional District candidate Sean Bielat will be taking part in a LIVE text chat on Newton Patch this Thursday, Oct. 11 at noon. If you have a question you'd like to submit in advance, leave a comment on this story or email Editor Melanie Graham.
