Five Things You Need to Know Today: Sept. 30

1. HopeWalks. Newton-Wellesley Hospital will host its annual HopeWalks event today starting at 9 a.m. The 3.5-mile neighborhood walk benefits the Integrative Support Services offered at the Vernon Cancer Center. The HopeWalks route will begin and end at the hospital, and all ages are welcome. Check-in will begin at 9 a.m., opening ceremonies will start at 9:30 a.m., and the walk will begin at 10 a.m.

3. Jazz in the Yard. The Newton Jazz and Wine Festival will welcome four jazz groups to the Jackson Homestead and Museum today for a "Jazz in the Yard" event. Patrons are invited to bring their own chairs and blankets to set up on the lawn and listen go the music of Cruzamente, the Fred Woodward Trio, the Rusty Scott Trio and Persian Blue. The event will run from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. and the rain date is Oct. 13.

4. Chamber music concert. Sharan Leventhal, violin, Jonathan Miller, cello, and Randall Hodgkinson, piano, will perform today at Trinity Episcopal Church. The chamber music conert starts at 2:30 p.m. and will include Beethoven's Piano Trio in D, Opus 70, No. 1, “Ghost”, and Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor, Opus 66. Tickets are $27 adults, $24 seniors, $14 students and high school students are free.

5. Walk/Bike Week events. There are a number of events happening today for the city's first ever Walk/Bike Week. You can go on a family-friendly, group bike ride, fix your bike at International Bicycle and raise funds for safer streets. In addition, Waban Avenue will be closed to motor vehicle traffic from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. and instead, open to cyclists and walkers only.
