Humphrey, Winters Win Preliminary Election In Newton’s Ward 5

NEWTON, MA — And then there were two: Tuesday 1,413 people - or some 17 percent of registered voters - came out to the polls to help figure out who might replace Councilor John Rice in Ward 5.

William Humphrey and Kathryn Winters will now go on to face off in November following the close three-way race for the city council seat.

Humphrey, 28, is a former senior editor of a public policy website. He wracked up 491 votes, while Winters, a 49, a tax attorney, came in right behind with 483 votes.

Rena Getz, a 61-year-old scientist won 437 votes, according to the city clerk’s office:
