Letter to the editor From Jen Abbot:

Bryan Barash Has My Vote

There are a number of reasons why Bryan Barash has my vote for Ward 2 Councilor, but at the top of the list is the strength of his character. Our City Councilors are the first point of contact for residents who have questions, issues, or concerns in their neighborhoods. It is imperative that every individual, regardless of their political leanings, feel welcomed and respected by those who represent them. Simply put, Bryan is one of the most compassionate and inclusive people I have met in Newton.

Our national politics are so divisive, the language used by some leaders so offensive, that I often have to turn off the news in the presence of my children. It disturbs me to think that they may come to see angry tweets filled with insults as an acceptable way to deal with differences of opinion. Sadly, we now see some of this discourteousness even at the local level when controversial issues arise.

I know that a wide range of opinions exist across the city, within our wards, neighborhoods, and schools. Even on my own block, there is disagreement on local issues, like taxes or development. This diversity makes it critically important for our local elected officials to be inclusive, welcoming, open-minded, and collaborative. They need to be able to listen patiently and respond respectfully to a wide range of opinions. Bryan has a track record of doing just that in his job at the State House and in his volunteer roles in our community.

To move our city forward to address critical issues like the climate crisis and transportation, we will need to make tough decisions that require debate and compromise. Bryan Barash is ready to lead these efforts, modeling civil discourse and transparency. I urge all Ward 2 voters to join me in voting for Bryan on November 5. Your voice will matter not just on Election Day, but throughout his term as he will work diligently for everyone, with everyone, to help Newton solve the complicated issues we all face.

However, still feel free to submit as a blog even if you only plan on writing one. Try this: How do I make a Patch account?

2. As a neighbor post. It's as easy as going clicking typing and posting.
