Newton Candidate Nights: What To Know

Save the date. Area councils are set to lead debates Oct. 20 and 27.

NEWTON, MA — With less than a month until municipal elections, the yard signs are everywhere and you can feel the last push as candidates jockey for your attention and your vote. Speaking of votes: every vote counts in these elections for city council and school committee.

The last day to register to vote for the Nov. 5 elections is Wednesday, October 16. If you haven't already, you can register online or head down to City Hall and register in person.

On to the debates. Candidates have already had a first chance to debate, thanks to the League of Women Voters. Up next: The Newtonville Area Council, Waban Area Council, Newton Highlands Area Council and the Upper Falls Area Councils are set to host debates.

The councils will focus on Ward 1, 2 and 3 Sunday, October 20. Head to Newton North's cafeteria and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. former journalist Marcus Breen, of Boston College will moderate.

Former TAB editor Andy Levin will moderate a debate for Wards 5-6 to be held Sunday, October 27, also from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Zervas. Ken Parker will moderate the school committee debates for wards 5 and 6.
