NEWTON, MA — It appears Newton students exceeded performance when compared with the State average on Math and English Language Arts for grade 10, and all grades for Science at Newton Public Schools, according to data the state just released. Three Newton schools were among the 60 to receive recognition under the state's accountability system for this year.

However, this year Newton's lower grades got a "partially meeting targets" assessment. Since the state started grading on a curve this is the second year results showed an uptick in high achieving schools from the year before. The state released the 2019 MCAS scores on Tuesday.

Superintendent David Fleishman said the department needs some time to analyze the results.

State education officials said the accountability system is "more comprehensive" than the previous system. It takes into account more than just test scores, considering student achievement, student growth, high school completion, English proficiency, chronic absenteeism, and advanced coursework.

Bowen, C.C. Burr and Charles E. Brown Middle School all got shout outs this year.
