Newton Specialty Pet Shop Closes, Reopens Under New Management

NEWTON, MA — You may have noticed it as you've been waiting in traffic along Needham Street, but last month a specialty pet food store opened on the strip, where Especially for Pets once was. If you're a pet parent and lean more toward the natural foods for you furry companion, now's your chance to check them out. Loyal Companion, which bills itself as a chain of pet nutrition and supply stores dedicated to modern and holistic pet wellness, is planning a grand opening at its Newton shop this weekend.

Loyal Companion is operated by Independent Pet Partners, which recently acquired seven well-known independent pet retailers including Especially For Pets, which had been getting mixed reviews online for a while.

The chain, which has 58 stores across five east coast states, plans to expand in Greater Boston and Boston this year and next.

This is the kind of pet shop where you can find all-natural pet food — including raw, wet and freeze-dried brands and treats. The stores also have grooming centers much like PetSmart at 215 Needham Street, but this chain also has self-wash stations, with daycare and training services as well.

• Newton (opened October 17; grand opening November 16-17) — 130 Needham St

• Wellesley (opened October 29; grand opening November 16-17) — 276 Washington St
