Newton Sports Round Up: Newton Track Teams Excel at State Meet, NNHS in 2 Section Finals
Newton North and Newton South both had great performances in the State Track Meet.

Newton's track and field athletes showed they are the best in the state, with the Newton North boys winning the State Meet and Newton South's boys finishing third.
The Newton North girls had a strong showing, too, finishing fifth at the meet held at Westfield State on Saturday, June 1.
Ryan Lucken's time of 48.75 won the 400 meters for the Newton North senior, according to results on Milesplit.com. Fellow Tiger Jung Park also came home with a state title with his time of 14.26 in the 110 meter hurdles.

Newton North's girls 4 x 800 relay took first place at the meet with a time of 9:20.81, and the Newton South girls placed seventh in the race.
Michaela Smith of Newton North took second in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet 7.5 inches. She also finished 10th in the discus.

The Tiger's Gabe Montague got second in the 800 with a time of 1:54.55, and teammate Mike Schlichting got third in the 2 miles with a time of 9:29.60.
Boys relay teams from both high schools performed well. Newton North's 4 x 400 relay finished second and Newton South placed eighth in the same event. Newton South's 4 x 100 relay finished fifth.
In the triple jump, Newton North's David Oluwadara registered 46 feet-8.5 inches - the second best jump of the meet. Meanwhile, in the shot put, the Tiger's Carl Whitman got second with a throw of 56-8, and Newton South's Ryan Kim got ninth. Kim did even better in the discus, where he finished second with a throw of 154-09.
Newton South's Ben Eisenberg placed fifth in the pole vault.
Nick Fofana of Newton North tied for seventh in the high jump.
Newton North's Meghan Bellerose finished seventh in the girls 400 meters with a time of 57.98.
Softball
Newton North's softball team squeaked by Acton-Boxborough, 11-10, in Thursday's Div. 1 North Section semis, and now have a showdown with Central Catholic at Martin Field in Lowell on Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
The Tigers (18-6) are seeded 10th and also collected wins against Waltham, Methuen and Westford along the way. Central Catholic has a record of 19-4, and beat Concord-Carlisle to get to the section final.
Boys Tennis
Newton North's boys tennis squad faces Boston College High School in the Div. 1 South Section Final on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Old Rochester High School in Mattapoisit.
The No. 7 seed Tigers (15-4) advanced to the section final after beating Franklin Xaverian, and then Wellesley. Fourth-seeded BC High School comes in with a record of 19-2, reaching the final by beating top-seeded Barnstable.
