Newton Students Receive Academic Honors from WPI, Villanova, Clark Univ.

A roundup of local students who have made dean's lists, graduated from college, or received other academic honors.

More than 20 Newton and Chestnut Hill residents named to Washington Univ. Dean's List

A number of Newton residents were recently named to the Washington University Dean's List for the spring 2012 semester. The students include:

  • Chestnut Hill resident Samuel Leffell, who is enrolled in the university's School of Engineering and Applied Science.
  • Chestnut Hill resident Sarah Plovnick, who is enrolled in the university's College of Arts & Sciences.
  • Chestnut Hill resident Andrew Ridker, who is enrolled in the university's College of Arts & Sciences.
  • Newton resident Bradley Baskir, who is enrolled in the university's John M. Olin School of Business.
  • Newton resident Julia Berk, who is enrolled in the university's John M. Olin School of Business.
  • Newton resident Naomi Ebstein, who is enrolled in the university's School of Engineering and Applied Science.
  • Newton resident Nahuel Fefer, who is enrolled in the university's College of Arts & Sciences.
  • Newton resident Joshua Garvin, who is enrolled in the university's School of Engineering and Applied Science.
  • Newton resident Abraham Geller, who is enrolled in the university's College of Arts & Sciences.

  • West Newton resident Julia Kindlon, who is enrolled in the university's College of Arts & Sciences.

According to a press release from the St. Louis, Missouri school, the dean's list requirements vary depending on the college at the university. Generally, though, students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Four Newton residents named to Villanova Univ. Dean's List

Four Newton residents recently made the Villanova University Dean's List for the spring 2012 semester.

The students named to the list include Newton Centre resident Matthew Cincotta, who is pursuing a bachelor's degree in the College of Engineering; Newton resident Anthony Duplisea, who is studying finance in the School of Business; Newton resident Sarah Fitzpatrick, who is enrolled in the College of Nursing; and Waban resident Elizabeth May, who is also pursuing a degree in finance from the School of Business.

According to a press release from the Villanova, Pennsylvania school, students must earn a 3.5 grade point average to make the dean's list.

Several Newton students earn academic honors at Clark Univ.

Several Newton students recently received academic honors at Clark University for the spring 2012 semester.

Auburndale resident Natasha D. Cochran, Newton resident Victoria P. Krinsky, Newton Highlands resident Pascal M. Jundt, and Newtonville Eric I. Riklin were all awarded the honor.

In addition, Newton residents Anastasiya A. BlyumJamie Duncan-Brown and Stefan R. Cohen were awarded second honors. 

According to a press release from the Worcester school, students who receive first honors earn a semester grade point average of 3.8 out of a possible 4.3. To earn second honors, students must have a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.79.

Three Newton students make WPI Dean's List

Three Newton residents were recently named to the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Dean's List for the spring 2012 semester. 

The students include: Newton Centre resident Elisabeth Jeyaraj, who is a senior majoring in biomedical engineering; Newton resident Pak Wu, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering; and Newton resident Nathaniel Sweet, a freshman majoring in chemistry.

According to a press release from WPI, the criteria for the school's dean's list does not involve a grade point average, like other schools. Instead, students make the list based on the amount of work completed at the "A level."

"WPI's academic programs are remarkably rigorous, so being named to the Dean's List is a testament to hard work, a sharp mind, and a commitment to excellence," said Provost Eric Overström in the press release.  

Two Newton residents graduate from Villanova

Newton Centre resident Matthew Cincotta and Newton resident Emily Strange recently graduated from Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania. 

According to a press release from the school, Cincotta received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and Strange received a Bachelor of Arts degree. The commencement was held on Sunday, May 20. 

Marc Ruch graduates from UMass Lowell

Newton resident Marc Ruch recently graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, according to a press release from the school. 

Ruch, who graduated with a chemical engineering degree, received the College of Engineering’s Nuclear Engineering Award. He was also recognized as a Commonwealth Honors Program Scholar, which means he maintained a grade point average of 3.25 or higher, taken at least 18 credits at the honors level, completed a senior honors thesis and presented that thesis in a public venue. 

Ruch was also selected for “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges,” according to the press release. 

UML's commencement was held on Saturday, May 26.

Three Newton residents make Binghamton Univ. Dean's List

Newton residents Shira M AnisLeah M Geller and Rachael E Utstein were recently named to the Binghamton University Dean's List for the spring 2012 semester.

According to a press release from the Binghamton, New York school, the three Newton students received the honor from the university's Harpur College of Arts and Sciences.
