NEWTON, MA — If you're starting to see buttons and Facebook posts about city councilors, that's most likely because there's an election coming up. For most Newton residents that won't mean a trip to the polls until November. But for those living in Ward 5, where Councilor John Rice is not running for re-election, there's a preliminary Sept. 10 to winnow the field from three to two.

It's a race, folks.

The polls for the preliminary race open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
